Take action against fraud

What to do if you become a victim of fraud

Report Identity Theft

Take immediate action if your identity has been stolen. Helpful information can also be found on the FTC's Identity Theft website.

  1. Contact the companies where you know fraud occurred. Ask them to close or freeze the accounts. Change logins, passwords and PINs for your accounts.

  2. Place a fraud alert and get your credit reports.

    1. Place a free, one-year fraud alert by contacting one of the three credit bureaus. That company must tell the other two.
    2. Get your free credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Go to annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.
  3. Report Identity Theft to the FTC (www.identitytheft.gov).
  4. Consider filing a report with your local police department, especially if the theft or related crime occurred locally.
  5. Close any accounts that were identified as opened fraudulently in your name.
  6. Dispute any fraudulent charges on your accounts.
  7. Correct your credit report by disputing unauthorized accounts or activity (see web links in “2” above). Providing an FTC Identity Theft report will facilitate the blocking of the incorrect information on your credit report.
  8. Consider adding an extended fraud alert or credit freeze with the credit bureaus.
  9. Review your credit reports on a regular basis at annualcreditreport.com
