Chip Card FAQs
What is a chip card?
A chip card is a debit or credit card that contains an embedded microchip that encrypts cardholder information into a unique code that increases data security when used at a chip-enabled terminal.
Where can I use my chip card?
Many merchants across the US are beginning to accept chip card transactions and this acceptance will continue to grow in the next few years. Chip technology is already used in 130 countries around the world so you will have greater acceptance when traveling internationally. If the merchant does not accept chip cards, you will still be able to use your card with the magnetic stripe. Customers can use their cards for payment over-the-phone or online just as you always have.
What is a contactless card or terminal?
First Horizon Bank chip-enabled consumer credit cards and select business credit cards allow for a contactless payment option. When you see the symbol on your credit card and the terminal, you may wave your card in front of the terminal instead of inserting it into the terminal. Remember, the contactless feature is only available for transactions under $75.
How do I know if my card or a terminal is contactless?
Look for the symbol at checkout. Keep in mind, First Horizon Bank consumer and small business credit cards are contactless.
Is there a limit on contactless transactions?
Yes, the limit for a contactless credit card transaction is $75.
Does First Horizon Bank charge any additional fees for using the chip card?
No, First Horizon Bank does not charge any additional fees to use the chip technology.
Are there any situations where I could experience issues using my chip debit card?
When traveling internationally, some card readers at unattended terminals (like public transportation kiosks, gas pumps, etc) will require a special PIN. This is not the PIN you would normally use for U.S. transactions. As such, your card will not be accepted. In these situations, locate an attended terminal to complete your transaction or have an alternate payment method.
What if my chip card doesn’t work when I insert it into the chip terminal?
Some merchants may have chip terminals, but they may not be activated to accept chip cards. If you are unable to insert your chip card into a chip terminal, you can always swipe your card to complete the transaction.
Do I need to use a PIN with my Visa chip card?
In most cases, you’ll sign for credit purchases and either sign or enter your PIN for debit purchases, just like you do today.
Why does my chip credit card work at the chip-enabled terminal but my chip debit card does not?
Until the technology is available everywhere, chip card acceptance may vary by type of payment card at some merchants. During this transition, you can always swipe your card to complete your purchase.
